We are living through a climate crisis that will shape the future of our planet for generations to come. It’s vital that we act now to prevent further devastation to our environment and protect Washington’s natural resources. For actions to succeed, the crisis needs to be addressed at all levels of government, business, and in our everyday lives.
During the 2019 and 2020 sessions, I sponsored Senate Bill 5811 to certify Washington as a Zero Emissions Vehicle state and promote cleaner air and more renewable transportation. In March 2020, Gov. Inslee signed the bill into law – a huge win for public health and our environment. In 2017, about 45% of Washington’s greenhouse gas emissions came from the transportation sector. With nearly double the access to ZEV’s that comes with this bill, Washington will likely reduce carbon emissions by 100,000 tons a year.
Using an equity-based approach that prioritizes the needs and voices of communities most impacted by climate change, Washington must continue to strive for more sustainable policies.
