A fair MVET that keeps light rail on track
My constituents want light rail. But they also want a tax system that is fair and one that fits better with their monthly budgets. My bill, SB 6606, will align the MVET valuation tables with a vehicle’s actual fair market value.
Between Sound Transit’s projected surpluses close to $2 billion by 2028 and the land banking provisions in my bill, we can enact a fair MVET with minimal or no impact to ST3 projects. SB 6606 also allows drivers to pay their car tabs quarterly or monthly through their Good To Go! accounts if they want to avoid that once-a-year sticker shock.
This has been a spirited debate on all sides of this issue. I encourage you to watch my committee testimony and look forward to hearing your feedback. I will continue working toward a solution that ensures light rail will come to our region as planned while also bringing fairness to the MVET.
