Senate Members of Color Caucus co-chairs support governor’s equity package

The Washington State Senate Members of Color Caucus (MOCC) co-chairs today issued the following statements concerning Gov. Jay Inslee’s Equity Proposal.

“Our communities have long been calling out for leadership that takes a hard look at inequity in our state and steps forward with bold action to respond to these needs,” said Sen. Rebecca Saldaña (D-Seattle). “I look forward to partnering with the governor in this work to serve every Washingtonian, especially the historically marginalized and underrepresented.”

“I’m glad that the governor has recognized the crucial need for addressing issues of equity in our systems,” said Sen. Joe Nguyen (D-White Center). “Our neighbors – especially in our communities of color, disabled communities, low-income folks – cannot wait any longer on resources and reforms. We need to act now, and this clear equity package from the governor’s office is a great place to start.”

The MOCC is made up of eight senators who identify as people of color: Senators Mona Das, Manka Dhingra, Bob Hasegawa, Steve Hobbs, Nguyen, Emily Randall, Saldaña and Sen.-elect T’wina Nobles. Recognizing that Washington state’s strength is rooted in its diversity, the MOCC works to answer issues of racial and economic inequality through collaborative, community-driven work built around creating opportunities for all. They work across chambers and across the aisle to advance policy that will expand access to the legislature and improve outcomes for all Washingtonians.
